Is it possible for these two rodents to cross?

Can you cross a gerbil and a hamster? What would you call it,Maybe a hambil?

Im NOT going to cross them but just curious. Is it possible for these two rodents to cross?
It probably isn't genetically possible to cross a gerbil and a hamster.

First of all, these are two different rodents that aren't part of the same family (genetically speaking), the gerbil is classified as part of the Muridae family while hamsters are Cricetidae. This means that if even they happened to breed with each other, they'd probably lack homologous genes and make the offspring inviable. In other words, the genes of the hybrid would be so incomplete/messed up that the embryos wouldn't grow correctly.

If it were possible though, maybe it could be called a Hambil or a GerbsterIs it possible for these two rodents to cross?
Well technically you could. There is nothing stopping it. No mechanical (size issue) or family issue. How do you think they got ligers? The hambils would not be able to reproduce though, so it's kinda a moot point.

Btw this covers prezygotic barriers, for post zygotic barriers the hambil might not develop properly and die shortly after conception.

I don't think you can... I think it's like saying can you cross a human with a gorilla. But, they have actually crossed a lion with a tiger successfully. Also I searched if hamsters even got along with hamsters, but they tend to kill each other. I wouldn't do it...
they wouldnt be able to produce anything that would live . therefore , it would be called 'dead' .
