You can use aluminum duct pipe (depending on the diameter of the tree trunk). Wrap it around the trunk and secure it. You can also buy plastic for this purpose. Try using aluminum foil, put it around the perimeter of the tree trunk. They can't get good footing and won't be able to climb.
