Can you feed a snake anything other than rodents?

i am looking to buy a snake and im very interested in a jungle carpet python and ive read as much as i can about them.


but there was 1 thing that i don't really like and that is the idea of feeding it rodents. can i get any other type of food from a butcher?Can you feed a snake anything other than rodents?
Sorry to say but your python will have to eat small rodents.. mice, rats.. all that good stuff.





They get their nutrition from the organs and what not.





It just comes with being the owner of a snake. The snake depends on you to feed it. So you'll have to get over it and do what's right for the snake.

It is not illegal to feed a snake live prey. Most people don't do it because of the harm that can be done to the snake or reptile. But I assure you it's not illegal. They sell rodents in pet shops that are specifically labeled as feeders. If it was illegal they wouldn't be able to sell them.

I have no experience with feeding anything other than rodents to my snakes. I must combat some disinformation in this thread.


Snakes DO NOT eat greens, and can't digest vegetable proteins. Force feeding a snake greens will probably kill it.


Years ago there was a product on the market called snake steak sausages, or something similar, and I haven't seen them around in a while.


I think they still make the scenting products under the name 'mouse maker' , 'lizard maker', etc.


Also, I've heard of imprinting snakes still in the egg by putting a drop of whatever you want them to eat on the outside of the egg during the last 2 weeks of incubation.


This was tested by putting strawberry scent on the eggs, and once the snakes hatched, they were offered 2 prey items, one strawberry scented, and one regular. They chose the strawberry scented item a vast majority of the time.


I would still offer rodents, as they are a snake's natural food.


The alternative is feeding those 'snausages' to a snake that finally begins to eat them, and the company stops making them or goes out of business. Now you have no option. Also, I'd assume mice and rats are cheaper. You can buy frozen mice and rats much cheaper, and I'd think they would be better for your snake.


Rodents are your best bet, trust me.
I've actually seen Carpet Pythons eat Rabbits. But generally, you're going to have to feed it Rodents for the duration of it's life, as it's going to take a long time for it to become the size required to eat a rabbit.





In the wild, I believe their diet can also consist of birds, but I'm not sure.





I don't think you can feed it Butcher meat. At least, I wouldn't suggest ever feeding it butcher meat! Good luck finding human meat! If they don't wanna chomp down on you when they're crawling around on you, they probably don't think you taste that great.
You can get fish and egg eaters but Carpet Pythons generally only eat rodents and other small mammals. You could try it on Chicken breast but it probably wont touch it.

If want to feed it frozen/thawed make sure it has eaten frozen/thawed before you get it. Some snakes can be finicky and will only eat live.
Sorry they need to eat rodents to survive, but you can always feed him frozen mice instead of live ones. Its much safer for the snake and much cheaper too.
yeah a capret python will need to be fed mainly on rodents or other small mammals, they dont have to be live they can be frozen thawed but feeding meat from a butchers wont give it all the nutrition it needs.
snakes eat rats! if u dont like that..then i suggest you dont buy one!!

well it is very healthy for a snake to eat leaves like salad and little peices of veggies. i know b'cuz i have a snake named minnie. lol but these r the things they eat

also snakes like to eat things that are alive, well certain breeds. certain snakes wont eat something they didnt kill so you have to find out from an expert, not yahoo answers, sorry
