I'm rehabbing old house with potential rodents in the wall.?

What's the chances of seeing a rodent corpse in the wall. I hate to see those things but I can't avoid knocking down the wall of an old house. It's been over 2 years since anyone's lived in the house. Thanks!I'm rehabbing old house with potential rodents in the wall.?
Chances are your not going to find anything but dust %26amp; debri as critters generally use these area's as quick passage ways to their destination, they dont like trapping themselves, next if the house was built of good workmanship only air %26amp; bugs should reside, but you never can be to sure! If you do discover a rodent corpse he probably died of a stroke or was poisioned and did not make it to his destination trapesing through the walls. when you demo the corpse will probably go unnoticed due to being crushed by falling debri., ashes to ashes dust to dust. Good Luck %26amp; dont hold your breath.I'm rehabbing old house with potential rodents in the wall.?
';potential rodent';?? like in mouse sperm??
slight chance, most go in search of water when they are dying
I have seen mice trap themselves. I found a corpse when replacing a window. Not sure why but could be poisoned. A little advice for slowing rodents is caulk the holes of electrical, plumbing, heating/cooling gaps between joists and floors.

  • What mammal can deliver the most young in one birthing in addition to rodents?

I know that rodents such as mice and rats can deliver many offspring, but I want to know which one gives off the MOST in addition to them. What mammal can deliver the most young in one birthing in addition to rodents?
The above answer is right; the record litter size among wild mammals goes to the tailless tenrec, but according to the sources I found, the maximum record is 31 (of which 30 survived), not 32. However, the average n潞 of young is approx. 15.

The next largest litters correspond to some opossums (20 young), the ermine (a carnivore) with 18 kits, and the rest are rodents (with a maximum of 15 pups for some rat species).

Among domestic breeds (many of which have been selected to be prolific) the record belongs to a domestic mouse with 34 pups (33 of them survived.)

See the sources :-)What mammal can deliver the most young in one birthing in addition to rodents?
pigs, and dogs, pop into mind.
A common tenrec can lay up to 32 babies at one time, the most of any mammal in the world.

    tenrec

platypus?? i know theyre the only mammal to lay eggs... i dunno how many though... dogs can have quite a few puppies... cats, too... it seems the smaller they are, the more they can have... just an observation... but some small mammals only have one or two... monkeys... :)

How do i get rid of rodents of unusual size?

peanuts? How do i get rid of rodents of unusual size?
Depends on what kind of animal they are. Poison peanuts for gofers, a water hose and a baseball bat for moles, Rat poison for rats, but be very careful not to put it where pets or children can get to it. Those large sticky traps work well on rats too. But if you've got coons or possums then try one of those live traps and bait it with sardines in oil. If thats the case, set the traps at night. If it's a coon, good luck. They're plenty smart. Good luck. How do i get rid of rodents of unusual size?
my friend had a rat problem..we set out a bunch of bait (cat food, cheese, peanuts, peanut butter, etc) and sat around drinking beer with bb guns...that was a good day.
Congrats SG Doggies, u should ask YEAR of the RAT for answer! IMAO!

The rat will be pleased to entertain u well and dearly. lol.
build a better mouse trap haha

How do I get rid of rodents in my house without having to actually touch one or even see one?

Dude -- I hate to be rude, but let's start with the basics. First, clean your house. I don't mean straighten out the junk, I mean CLEAN. Throw stuff away. Use Pinesol (it comes in scents, now, not just that pine tar smell) or some other type of cleaning agent that does not require rinsing (the underlying pine scent helps repel all types of critters). Clean out under all your sinks (bath and kitchen) and throw away anything that is not absolutely required.

Close up all holes in all walls -- such as where pipes come in under sinks and behind gas ranges (rats and mice love crawling along hidden pipes -- they are a veritable rodent raceways). Check also behind your 'fridge, particularly if you have an icemaker (the water source has to come from some where). Ensure your dryer vent has some way of closing when not in use (there a lot of options available at every hardware store).

Find, dry and repair the source of all water leaks -- those buggers really need and seek out water (there might be a double whammy if there is a leaky pipe hidden in a wall or ceiling -- that just needs fixing). That includes emptying the drip tray under your fridge. Those buggers can live under that fridge in the warmth drinking from that drip tray.

Repair all openings in the siding of your house -- those buggers are getting in somewhere. Repair or replace all screen doors (I had a 3lb rat get into my house because I left the door wide open on a beautiful spring day. The rat died...so did my dog.)

Put your food away. No opened food containers on the counter, stove or fridge. Make sure all of the ';water traps'; are filled in all of your unused bathrooms and toilets (those are the things that keep the sewer gases out of your house, if they dry out they provide an open source for rodents and insects to come in from the sewer (yuck).

Now, once you've closed all means for the buggers to get in (and out) it's time to kill those that you have. If you don't mind the smell of putrifying rodent bodies, go ahead and lay out some DCon -- BUT NOT IF YOU HAVE KIDS OR PETS. I prefer the old fashioned ';clap-traps.'; They may be a bit primative, but you don't have rodent carcasses fermenting in places you can't see. I usually bait the traps with peanut butter and throw the whole thing away once I capture a bugger. If you reuse the traps, you may have boil them to get the smell of the dead one off the trap otherwise you may not catch another one. Put the traps in corners that are out of the way but are visible enough to see if they caught anything. Keep the bait facing away from the corner.

If rats are infesting your house, you may have to fill all of the holes with a combination of broken glass (use broken beer bottles) and steel wool. The rats will chew thru vertually any other material, so the glass/steel wool will act as a rodent barrier underneath the cosmetic caulk or foam filling the hole.

You'll get rid of them all if you are merciless and relentless. As nasty as it is, you'll just have go on a full scale attack.

Good luck. How do I get rid of rodents in my house without having to actually touch one or even see one?
glue traps, but unfortunately you'll have to see them. i mean, they're going to get stuck, die, and eventually smell. you'll want to get them out before that happens. How do I get rid of rodents in my house without having to actually touch one or even see one?
you can buy those roach motels for mice and rats. ya know - they go in but they don't come out and you never have to see them but you DO have to place the box...more than likely in your attic next to all the little poopies
Try one of those ultrasound devices.
    Call the ORKIN man!!!
    exterminator
Get an exterminator because that way you can just tell them what to do. Though it may be a little expensive.
You need to call a pest control service and they will come montly if you want.

    That is what I do.

You may see a bug every now and again to due the season change, but you should be pretty well- bug free.
Hire someone, then leave for the day. That way, they can get rid of the rodents, and you don't have to watch.
you can put out Dcon, but then they'll crawl up in your walls and die.
Childproof while they are at school!

    (Sorry, I couldn't resist).

What are the harmful effects of Rodents to the public?

Well, I made this question here because the search results were no the ones I am looking for. It's kinda hard to just use search sites like Yahoo! I thought that maybe other people can or may tell me the answer.. =)What are the harmful effects of Rodents to the public?
Plague mostly or what the used to call black death.. and also rabies and just about any really bad disease or insect..What are the harmful effects of Rodents to the public?
Rodents are absolutely disgusting. They carry diseases, caused the plague, and chew up everything.
rodents, like rats and mice carry disease for one thing. They also eat things that cause public problems, like wiring.
Ew, well unless Rodents with a capital R is the proper name of something else entirely I can tell you....

rats are bad-tempered disease mongers that have been known to bite, chew on, and attack humans especially in Manhattan, there have been babies eaten by them. It sounds funny but it has seriously happened.

Deer Mice, Rock Squirrels, Prairie Dogs, Woodrats, Chipmunks, House Mice,

Kangaroo Rats, Rabbits, Brush Mice, Ground Squirrels, and Gophers carry the Hantavirus in their bodies and droppings, which is very harmful and dangerous to humans who come in contact with it.....I think it is fatal without treatment.

prarie dogs burrowing can ruin crops and cause structural damage to buildings.

ferrets are banned from being owned in Hawaii because they run such a high risk of carrying rabies

rodent borne diseases also include Weil's disease, the bubonic plague, the pneumonic plague, lassa fever, and lymphocyctic choriomeningitis.

    bats carry the lyssavirus.

They basically just harbor a lot of nasty disease and can destroy things based on the location of their habitat. I do feel bad that they get blamed so much for ';structural destruction'; because cities and buildings are expanding into their natural homes.

Recent health studies have shown a rise in hospital admittances from rodent bites and disease....probably a reflection of urban expansion into rural land, as that would lead to increased rodent contact.

Can you tell me the ending of Maurice and his educated rodents?

I know you think i didnt read the book... but i can swear i did. but at school i dont know how to say the ending... can u tell me how??? write the exact answer if a teacher said:

what is the ending of maurice and his educated rodents? in brief description please??

    thx guys

please... only reasonable answers! Can you tell me the ending of Maurice and his educated rodents?
Darktan's group is successful in rescuing an injured Hamnpork, though Darktan himself, the head of the Trap Disposal Unit, finds himself in a trap. After a near-death experience, and the death of Hamnpork, he assumes leadership, and sets out after Dangerous Beans. Maurice, in the meanwhile, has given in to his conscience and is also seeking them, but the voice gains power over him. Malicia and Keith, after gaining freedom, trick the rat catchers into revealing their secret by tricking them into thinking they have been poisoned. The rat catchers have created a powerful rat king 鈥?several rats, tied together at the tail, who make a single mind with power over others 鈥?who is named Spider, being made of eight rats (eight being a magical number on the Discworld).

Spider is interested in Dangerous Beans; other rats he can control, but Dangerous Beans has a mind similar to his: one that thinks for others. Dangerous Beans refuses Spider's offer of jointly ruling, as Spider wants to wage war on humans. As this happens, Malicia and Keith, under Spider's control, are about to set free the trapped rats. Spider tries to destroy Dangerous Beans' mind; this is felt by his army of rats, and Maurice. Dangerous Beans is able to resist, but Maurice reverts to being a cat, and the cat instinct tells him to pounce on Spider, though enough of his mind remains to tell him to sever the knot in Spider's tails.

Darktan's army, who have been fighting Spider's rats, find Peaches in Spider's lair, which is burning after Peaches dropped a match. Maurice, seeing Dangerous Beans, attacks and kills him. He emerges carrying the body of Dangerous Beans. When he is safely out, he falls over and dies. In ghostly form, he sees the ';Bone Rat'; coming for Dangerous Beans. He attacks him, but is picked up by Death, with whom he strikes a deal: one of his remaining lives for Dangerous Beans'.

Though Spider is defeated, there is still a problem remaining: the rat piper is due to arrive the next day. The rats set about rounding up the other, non-intelligent, rats ('keekees'). When the piper arrives, Keith challenges him. His pipe had been broken by the rat-catchers, so he uses a borrowed trombone, to the sounds of which Sardines comes out dancing. When the piper starts to play his magical pipe, the rats plug their ears to avoid being charmed. One rat does come out: Mr. Clicky, a clockwork rat the rats use to test traps.

The piper calls Keith aside, and tells him the tricks of the trade: the pipe contains a hidden slide position for a trick note that drives rats away, the stories are made up so people will be scared into paying. Keith and the piper then lead the keekees out of town 鈥?Keith wants to maintain the story of the piper, and the rats want a convenient way to set the keekees free.

Once that has been done, the rats emerge, offering to tell the humans where to find the stolen food and money, in return for living peacefully with them. Maurice negotiates, selling the humans a promise of a brighter future, with the rats as a tourist attraction. Keith stays on as the town's piper, and the town becomes a tourist attraction, as Maurice predicted, and everybody remarks on how clean the place is.

    Later, Maurice finds a child to whom he asks ';Hey, stupid looking kid. You wanna be Lord Mayor? No, down here kid.';

Beside feeding live food like rodents or birds to Ball Python, what else can I feed my Ball Python?

My Ball Python is still juvenile (2 ft long).

I do not want to feed live living things to my snake. Anyone has any idea or experiences feeding non live to snakes?

Thanks.Beside feeding live food like rodents or birds to Ball Python, what else can I feed my Ball Python?
The Ball Python will typically eat mice when small, and mice, rats or gerbils when full grown. One feeding per week is sufficient.

The Ball Python is a notoriously difficult eater, especially if it has been captured in the wild. Many owners experience tremendous frustration in getting their pets to eat.

If at all possible, pre-killed mice are the preferable choice. These are available from most pet stores at a resoanble price, and can be had in a variety of sizes. Simply warm up the mouse to body temperature (100F), and place it in the terrarium. Don't handle the mouse with your hands, as your scent may confuse the snake.Beside feeding live food like rodents or birds to Ball Python, what else can I feed my Ball Python?
they only eat smaller rodents like hamsters, mice, rats, Guinea pigs, and things like that. if you dont like feeding live (i dont either for my snakes health) then you can try buying a frozen one and puttin it in warm water to thaw it out. once the mouse is warm, use a pair of tongs and make it wiggle in front of the snake. make it ';look'; alive. it may take a little while to get your bp over to frozen, or..she/he may not take frozen. i would try it and see what happens. i just got my other bp and i plan on puttin her on frozen (hopefully!)

and dont put the frozen one in the mic..it could burn your snake. and like someone else said, dont use your hands, use tongs. if she does not take it you can also try putting some tuna juice or chicken broth on the mouse to make it more intresting to the snake. good luck!
You can feed frozen/thawed rodents or. pre-killed rodents. Birds are not as nutritionally complete to feed as rodents are. In the wild, the more common and natural prey item for the ball python is an African rodent species called the geraboa.
if you feel bad for feeding live food for a snake you shouldn't have gotten one

i would say get a different pet
    Frozen rodents.

Why do pet stores sell cedar and pine bedding if they know it's dangerous for rodents?

everytime i go to a pet store they sell pine and cedar bedding and i get frustratedWhy do pet stores sell cedar and pine bedding if they know it's dangerous for rodents?
Because people will buy it. Laws of supply and demand. I truly wish that stuff was made illegal. Why do pet stores sell cedar and pine bedding if they know it's dangerous for rodents?
For those people who are really serious about this situation please see the answer provided by spazrats.

Because they don't care. It's a cheap way to make money for them.
Because its cheap. They hope to sell you the rodent before it croaks.
Kiln-dried pine IS safe. The harmful hydrocarbons are removed. Pine has no other harmful substances. (phenols are NOT harmful)

Cedar cannot be made safe because it has oils that cannot be removed in a bulk bedding product without breaking a companie's bank.

Believe it or not, scientific labs often use cedar for their rodents. The same rodents they take test results from and assume are unskewed by outstanding factors. I don't know why.

Most stores will sell whatever they can though. Its up to the consumer to research what product is best. Stores are not to be held responsible for how people care for their pets, no matter how you feel about it. I for one, don't like carefresh, especially on myco-prone rodent species. I prefer kiln-dried or aspen to synthetics.
Why do they sell ';goldfish bowls';? (which are death traps for goldfish)

Why do they sell fish that will get aggressive and huge when they know it'll live in a 10 gallon tank?

Why do they tell you bettas can live comfortably in those little cups?

Why do they keep birds behind glass?

Why do they give wrong information on care and keeping of birds and reptiles?

    BECAUSE THEY CAN!!

Because people don't do research on their own.

Because people don't want to spend and extra $2 for good care.

BECAUSE THEY'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY.
I have read that it isnt good for them to breath. It irritates the myrco that they all carry. You could use newspaper but the ink my stain the coat of your rodent. You can also use towels, old clothes, anything like that. You can also buy litter online at pet stores. Even good ol' walmart carries bedding that isnt cedar or pine. Some common pet stores are Pet Supermarket, Petco, Petsmart. Hope this helped.
I think that pine and cedar bedding is appropriate for other types of animals. Since they cater to many different types of animals they will probably continue to sell it. It is really up to the consumer to make sure it is good for their animal to use.
I know the large bags of pine, are often supplied for anyone who owns livestock, to cover their stalls in. Cedar can be used in the same setting, to help repel fleas.

They DO need to put a warning up next to the pine %26amp; cedar, letting the general public (especially first time rodent owner who don't know!) know about the harmful effects of these products *especially cedar!!!!* Instead of sit by quietly as people purchase them.
It's because the public is still ignorant of it's dangers. They want the beautiful aroma of the wood bedding to overpower the stench of the rodent (note sarcasm).

It's up to you and me, and everyone here to educate ourselves on it's dangers and inform the public of the same. Boycott the stores that sell the nasty stuff and/or give them pamplets to prove the dangers.

It's supply and demand, as long as the consumer continues to buy it, the stores will continue to stock it. As soon as sales go down, the stores will no longer want to keep it on their shelves.

What is a good website to buy small rodents such as chinchillas and hamsters?

I would encourage you to find a local breeder. Or if you are not looking to breed yourself, use a local shelter or petfinder.com

I would discourage buying any animal from the BIGBOX pet stores.

Do NOT buy online from just anyone... check them out and talk to them by phone - before you commit to anything visit them in person. What is a good website to buy small rodents such as chinchillas and hamsters?
do not buy them from petsmart. their suppliers are horrible to the animals. dont believe me go to peta and watch the video its not hard to find. if you have a locally owned pet store i would buy from themWhat is a good website to buy small rodents such as chinchillas and hamsters?
DONT buy them online! buy them in a pet shop where you can see what you are getting. buying pets oline is terrible! sorry i couldnt answer your question but i just really dont think you should ever buy an animal online! xx :)
I would suggest checking out your local Human Society, they have what your looking for and these animals are healthy,up to date with all vaccinations ,and need a good home!
petfinder.com shows pets you can adopt from local shelters around where you live, but you have to go to the shelters, you can't just buy an animal online
    www.mysweetmonkey.com
    probally petfinder.com
First, the PETA video IS NOT true, so disregard what was said about that.

However, DO NOT buy a chinchilla from a Pet Store because they do not know how to properly care for these exotic pets. Most come from Pet Mills and are usually sick.

Don't just buy from any person online. You should buy from a reputable breeder. If you e-mail me with where your located, including your zip code, I can give you links to a few breeders. I'm a breeder myself so I know of some really good breeders. Breeders handle their chinchillas daily so they will already be friendly and won't take as much to get them bonded to you. You will know the complete background of the chinchilla, but if you purchase from PetSmart or PetCo you won't know anything about that chinchilla.

What are ';elderly'; rodents, rats to be exact, like?

Right now I have a cartoon image going through my head of a grey rat with a beard that has trouble getting around. I know better, but for some reason the cartoon is dominating my mind presently. =|

I mean, when my rat is nearing it's last month or so, will it be evident? I feel really silly for asking, but is there anything special it'll need then? What are ';elderly'; rodents, rats to be exact, like?
My fiance and I have had many rats come and go adn to be honest it seems like most of them ended up with some sort of reason for dying (mycro flare up that scarred the lungs, tumor ect.). With one in particular she started slowing down the older she got, the males seem to be more laid back then females (so far) and her fur did seems to have a bit of grey in it (more than her normal color). The best sign of a rat nearing the end is it's health (especially if your rat ever stops eating and drinking then there is something goign on, hoepfully long before then there will ahve been signs of illness by that point so you maybe able to treat it). When our rats get older we tend to spoil them a bit more than usual (I guess because we want them to have all the treats they can before going). Def a good diet is a must and tons of care/love (sounds corny but hey we all need it ayes). Please don't feel silly for asking your not at all =D

Take care and have a great Thanksgiving, also if you have any questions or need info check out ratfanclub.org Debbie is really amazing when it comes to rats (she even has her number and email addy so you can send questions to her). Take care =DWhat are ';elderly'; rodents, rats to be exact, like?
my special boy has lost a lot of his hair so looks a bit strange but still fairly active. My special pet ';chicken'; became a little thin so had to be encouraged to eat. They are prone to lumpy growths. Probably need to be put to sleep when this happens as just too expensive to operate. Good luck you do have 4 to 5 years of great fun and activity just watch the weights. Big boys can weigh over 300gms. Girls are smaller. I weigh them on the kitchen electronic scales as this gives you an idea of how they are doing. However just feeling them will soon tell you if they are over or under. Hopefully you have a friend for your pet of the same sex. They do remain tame even with 2 in fact they will vie for your attention and the characters are oh so different. One of mine I can play fight with and he pretends to bite the other just comes running to me for protection and treats. With the two I don't feel so guilty when I have not got the time to play as they play together.
well obviously it will vary between rats but basically theyll become pretty inactive and not eat much and if possible you should try to get a single story cage to make sure they dont try to climb and end up falling or something.

how old is your rat btw? you said 'when my rat' and unless its already getting old you really need to get it a friend, they shouldnt be kept alone!
They slow down some, to my experience, they don't turn 'grey'

    It will be evident.

You will want to 'spoil' them even more :)
A walking stick and maybe a wheelchair.
it will age just like a cat or a dog... you will know shes getting old.
    no nothing
well, they will look a lot older..

It's quick. How is shooting a horse in the head or breaking a small rodents neck .....?
Fine with it, I mean what you feel like after limping around with a broken leg for a while. How about being badly injured and slowly bleeding to death? a gun shot to the head and neck snap do seem so inhumane now do they? I mean I hunt but I only kill what I eat and I try and drop as fast and clean as possible. I also believe that there are some circumstances where it 100% justified. I'll never forget me and two of my friends were about to go target shooting in the woods with my bow and arrow and a raccoon was crossing the street. a car hit him and he lie there dieing another car hit him then a another and another no one even bothered to stop or even back up and kill once and for all. finally I flagged down a police officer told him what was going on he let me put an arrow in it's heart. there's a time and place for everything. now what I did was humanely euthanized or do you think it would better for the raccoon to be left to die after he got ran over a few more times or to crawl to the woods and have coyotes eat him alive?

It's hard to do but if your ever put in a situation where there's a animal and it can't talk to let you know what's wrong but you can tell by it's expression it can't go on hopefully you can do the right thing.
It is pretty cruel to kill for sure.

but if you can't help but kill them for some reason (ie. they are in tremendous pain that can't be made better) it's better for them to be killed faster.

like would you be burnt to death or shot ? given that you have both your legs missing and in massive pain or something like that.

Are rodents like rats and mice truly intelligent?

My few months old fancy mouse comes to you whenever you call her name.

Are rodents like rats, mice etc smart? Are rodents like rats and mice truly intelligent?
Yeah, they are pretty smart. My rats come to me when I call them for treats, and run away when I tell them its time to go back in the cage. I've taught one of mine to sit up and jump on command. I've been training rodents for a while, and for having such small brains they are surprisingly intelligent. I've never worked with mice, but I have with guinea pigs, hamsters, and fancy rats. The rats have been the most intelligent.

I would imagine rats and mice have been bred in labs and in captivity for so many generations for qualities such as timidity, quietness, and cleverness that they differ from wild rats as dogs are to wolves.

Anyway enjoy your mouse :) and there are lots of sites online that say how to teach your rodent tricks. It always impresses people who have never had a rodent as a pet.Are rodents like rats and mice truly intelligent?
Watch Stewart Little and you'll get your answer.... the little guy drives a car!!.

Is there any kind of pet I can buy that will terrify rodents from coming near the inside of the house?

I have a rodent problem INSIDE my walls and under my kitchen floor. I'm thinking of buying a pet anyway, and wondered if there are any specific types that will strongly deter rodents? Is there any kind of pet I can buy that will terrify rodents from coming near the inside of the house?
maybe try a ferret??Is there any kind of pet I can buy that will terrify rodents from coming near the inside of the house?
Don't choose a pet for its ability to mouse, call in the exterminators!

For deterring mice in the future, cats are good. We used to live in an old farmhouse with a cat who was a useless mouser. The stables outside were crawling with mice but we never had any in our house...we think the smell of cat kept them away.

You can also get sonic mouse scarers but these might affect your animals, and some humans can hear them too.
First off, don't use any rat or mice poison if you've been thinking about it, because they will die from it, but where will they go to die...inside your walls. Yuck! If you have used any, make sure it is all picked up and clean the areas afterwards before you introduce any dogs or cats.

If you get a cat, try to get one that was raised by a mother that hunted rodents. Better off, get two or more. With dogs, it is also good to get one that has had similar experience with rodents. Breed does not necessarily matter as long as the rodent experience is there. Make sure they are up to date on shots, just in case they get bit. Same for a snake.

Also, research what kind of rat you have then you can determine what would deter or get rid of them. If they are hanging about because of food you have to cut off the food supply. If it is for a place to live you need to find out where they go in and out at.

    Good luck!
You could try a cat and let it prowl around and the rodent will get the scent of the cat.

You could also try a dog the scent will scare them away.

Also you could try a rodent freindly trap or alarm just like dogs and cats you can get a certain spray or alarm that will keep them at bay you usually find these in gardening shops.
A cat would be a good choice. If you get a cat you'll have to make sure its not a Rag doll because they don't have the instinct to defend themselves from other animals.(they just lie down.)

Cats have a natural instinct to hunt down and capture things like mice and rats, they are very curious little cuties and will try to find and/or kill anything that causes a scratching sound or noise. Cats are also very quiet hunters, and if they really like you they will bring the dead animal to you AS A GIFT.of course, you'll have to throw it away, but it makes clean-up easier

    hope this helped!
You can have a cat. Avoid getting a hamster or something of that kind. Also set some traps. (In some states you need a hunting license so make sure to check on that). Also there are rat killers that you can buy at Home Depot. They are like green blocks and you can place them around the perimeter of your house. Hope I helped!
get a cat BUT call an exterminator out. If you call your local council they will be able to either send someone out or make a recommendation. Pets wont deter unless thy can get to them and unless your going to put your new pet under the floor boards it aint going to work.
Ferrets are vicious hunters. Cats, but you'll have to make sure you get a mouser. I had a cat who would not move from her spot for days until she caught the mouse. The other two are like ';oh, what's this?'; and ignore it. A dog like a terrier is a good choice but I don't have much experience in a dog hunting mice.
cats or a dog; terrier breeds that were made for rat hunting- jack russel terrier, rat terrier, dachsund, cairn terrier.
I would go with the ferret. Get a young one and they become amazing pets. I was so sad when mine passed on and would love to have another one.
buy a dog it doesn't really matter as long as it is not a toy breed you should most likely a big big big dog
Cats and dogs are the obvious answer here. The smell of them will put all but the bravest rodents off.
Either cats or something that is bred to hunt rodents, like a Jack Russell Terrier.
a dog they r soo kool
A snake will definitely keep them away. Of course it might keep some people away as well. (Like me for instance.) lol
A cat or a terrier, but they will probably just kill them
    Cats, lots of cats.
    meow.
    snakes
    idk, maybe a tiger?

How do cats react to rodents?

PLEASE ANSWER THIS IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED LIVING WITH BOTH CATS AND RODENTS!

I am wondering how your cats and rodents (rats, hamsters, gerbils...)reacted with each other. I know all cats are different with rodents. If you cat likes to catch animals, how did you keep your little rodent pets safe? How do cats react to rodents?
I have two cats (Sid and Beziman) and two rats (Mercutio and Wolverine).

Sid couldn't care less about the rats. He's an old cat and was around when we had hamsters years ago. He loved watching the turkeys and squirrels in our yard when he was young, but he's lazy now. When I got Mercutio and his late brother Santa Fe, Sid glanced at them, sniffed the cage, and hasn't cared since.

Beziman is young and is an avid squirrel-watcher. When I got the rats, he was terrified. It was hilarious. His entire coat was puffed up and he fled. It was a little awhile before he'd enter the room. By now, he's gotten pretty cocky. I have no idea what he'd do to the rat if he caught one, though. Sometimes he sits and watches with his tail flicking and his eyes very wide and fixated. Other times he focuses on me and asks for cuddles.

I just keep them separated, though. The cats are only allowed in the room if I'm in there and the rats are safely locked in their cages. I bring the rats downstairs, out of their cages, every day. If they're in my hood, I'm not concerned because I can very easily keep them safe. If they're playing on the couch, I just keep an eye out for Beziman. He can be in the room, but he can't be on the couch. If he approaches, I just block him from coming up. A water bottle that squirts also works. How do cats react to rodents?
i have 3 cats and 2 fancy mice. the mice are in a cage next to my computer. all my cats do is sit on top of the cage and watch the mice. the cage fell over one day and the mice got out i found them both unharmed. i think if the cats are accustomed to the mice then they won't bother them. i went to the store one day and came back to find a little mouse in my kitchen and my cats didn't even try to go after it. (this was a few weeks after i got my mice) so either my cats are really weird or know that the mice are apart of the household.
It honestly depends on your cat.

I know people whose cats have killed their rats.

BUT I know of people whose cats get along with rodents.

If you cat is older and likes to catch animals, just don't allow the cat in the same room as the rats and make sure they don't escape, or run around unsupervised.
I have a cat and 2 hamsters - All i do is keep the rodents in my room and keep the door closed. Then they can't encounter eachother, will they?
I'll put it this way, If you have a cat you won't have rats. If your question is about being friend? No way! Keep the rodents in a cage!
It is VERY dangerous for cats and rodents to be together. I would say you are going to need to keep your little rodent friends far away from your feline friends!

    Hope this helps!:)

Why do people keep rodents as pets? isnt it cruel to keep an animal in a little cage?

i think it should be banned. it is animal cruelty, why do people do that? Why do people keep rodents as pets? isnt it cruel to keep an animal in a little cage?
of course its not. its the same as keeping a dog in a backyard just in a different scale, larger animal larger space, and same with horses. as long as you take the animal out of this space every so often, then no is notWhy do people keep rodents as pets? isnt it cruel to keep an animal in a little cage?
I think it would be even more cruel to let a pet that small to wander around and find ways to get hurt. Keeping it in a luxurious cage with fun wheels, tubes and the all they can eat buffet is a much better, and safer, life.

If you were given a large house with a constant caretaker to clean the house and manage your health needs, endless food supplies, your favorite hobby items, and never having to work or pay a bill again for the rest of your life, wouldn't you be happy? It's about the same for them.

Though, I'm not sure why anyone would purposely keep a rodent as a pet. They're vile nasty little creatures, in my own opinion. But, to each their own.
as long as you frequently take the rat out of the cage and not put the rat in the cage all the time,I see no point in what you're saying.

Why do we keep birds in cages? That's more appropriate.Birds are meant to fly away.not caged.in rodents,i understand the need of cages as a home but on birds...i pity them...
Well,I wouldn't keep a rodent in a small cage.It would however have to be in a cage, just not a small one it would be huge.take up half of my room and have lots of tunnels.

    But I'll never own a rodent.=)

I had a pet mouse once, but I saved it from the lab at my college. I think him living in a cage (a very luxurious cage at that), was a much nicer alternative to being a test subject.
not if you love and care for it. As long as you hold it a lot and give it lots of little treats. If you ever owned one then you would know that it can be the luxury life for them.
My rat has a huge cage made for large rabbits.

He looks like a baby in that thing. %26gt;3
wuts the difference between that and keeping a cat in the house all the time?
Not if you have a mouse wheel, and tubes

What should I look for in a vet? (ones that believe in more natural practices and do rodents)?

My dogs are kibble fed (Nature's recipie but I will soon probably switch to Natural Balance or Life's Abundance...rents wont let me feed raw)

I'm looking for a vet in Sacramento, CA that won't push the vaccination thing or try and influence me to change food. One that will also take chinchillas. What should I look for in a vet? (ones that believe in more natural practices and do rodents)?
I have sugar gliders and cats and am the same way - I am comfortable with the diet I have them all on and do not believe in over vaccinating. It's REALLY hard to find a vet that will see exotics like sugar gliders and chinchillas in my area so I've had to really dig and am still searching. Mainly, see if you can get in to see the vet and have a one on one with out an actual exam of your pets. Get a feel for him/her and see how your comfort level is - if they are not willing to listen to your restrictions and knowledge on the vaccines and diet, thank them and walk away.

I made the mistake of seeing a vet I wasn't fully comfortable with for my Sugar Gliders. She said she was comfortable seeing me and taking my money, but refused to run basic urinalysis tests and perscribed me antibiotics on my hunch with no medical backup. Dont make that mistake! :) Good luck! What should I look for in a vet? (ones that believe in more natural practices and do rodents)?
I'm not in your part of the country, but I do use a lot of 'natural' medicine in my practice, as well as am very experienced in exotic pet medicine and surgery.

However, I must say this: If you choose not to vaccinate your dogs, start saving up your money in a special account NOW....because it will be only a matter of time before your dogs are exposed to and come down with distemper or parvo, which are very expensive to treat, and often fatal.

Unless they live in a plastic bubble, they WILL eventually be exposed....possibly even by you, just by walking through a store or in a yard and picking up the viruses on your shoes and bringing them home to your dogs. I see it all the time.

Edited to add: There is not a single place in the country where rabies is 'dead.' Just because you don't hear of cases, doesn't mean they aren't out there. It is a state LAW for the protection of humans that dogs be vaccinated for rabies, since dogs are more likely to come into direct contact with wildlife before humans will...then the dogs come in contact with us humans. If you choose to violate your state law, be prepared to pay a hefty fine.

As far as parvo vaccines, we keep them in the refrigerator until just before giving them to our patients. We have received years of in-depth education and training as to how the immune system works, and how to best protect it. Mail-order and feed-store vaccinations are the ones you have to worry about....they have about a 50% failure rate due to improper handling somewhere along the way before they reach their destination.

Arguments can be made both ways as to how often vaccination boosters need to be given for any disease. The only way to know for sure is to do a yearly antibody titer on each dog to see if it has a protective level for that particular virus or if it has sunk to the point of needing a boost. That's really what you should do...and any veterinarian will be happy to draw the blood and send those tests out for you. I just did 3 last week. It's more expensive than just giving the boosters, however, which is why most owners request that we just do that instead. But we still see dogs all the time whose owners get the vaccines only every 2-3 years, and they come down with parvo. (Distemper vaccinations can do that, too, but less frequently....they seem to last a little bit longer.)

As an example: Just had a 4-year-old dog in a couple of weeks ago that tested strongly positive for parvo and had a depressed WBC, along with other very typical symptoms. She had her normal puppy series and a booster a year later, but then the owner stopped. She wished she hadn't. Sure would have saved her a lot of money....and saved her dog a lot of needless pain. (She recovered with aggressive IV treatment for 3 days in the hospital, and is now doing well.)
Any vet or animal person that doesn't push shots is not the practitioner you want. All puppies should have the full set of shots and a booster a year later. I did decide this year to have my yearly vaccines with my rabies every three years due to the excessive over vaccinating that is done. We have seen auto immune develop in dogs that were over vaccinated.

However; my dogs are exposed to many of these diseases due to rescue and have built up their own immunities. I go by the rabies vaccination schedule that I have to abide by in my state. If the three year booster is good enough for rabies it should hold true for the other diseases.

What is is that's so unappealing about rodents?

I have gerbils, and a lot of people I know are afraid of them/grossed out by them, and i want to know what people think is so wierd. Honest answers, please!!!!What is is that's so unappealing about rodents?
    Flare, ferrets arent rodents...

i think people tend to have a problem with rodents, as mice and rats are seen as diseased pests.

its just people acting on stereotypes

...although i bet those same people wouldnt have a problem with guinea pigs or beavers, which are too rodents.

very few rodents nowadays, especially domestic ones can harm humans - most are actually clean and nice.

without sounding nasty, people who say animals like that are gross etc are just uneducated and ignorant :)What is is that's so unappealing about rodents?
Rodents are known for pretty much one thing, disease. Remember all of those stories and history lessons about the plague? Even these days there are warnings everywhere about not touching wild mice, or if certain fleas that were in contact with rats bite you, or if a certain mouse poops in your house, etc. you can get a long list of illness. Beyond that, they're small, quick and some people find their looks to be revolting. They also have a nice reputation of being vicious biters.

Obviously a domestic, tame gerbil isn't going to have any of these problems, but people are still going to be cautious.

Edit: To the person below me, if you read all of my answer you'd see that I did not specifically say that rats caused the plague, and I even mentioned that illness comes from the fleas on rats. Maybe you should actually read something before freaking out over it, hm? Also, all wild animals, rodent or not, do have some threat of having some kind of disease on them.
i personally love gerbils and any animal. The only reasons i could think of that makes people grossed out by them or afraid of them is that-they associate gerbils with rats and they immediately think Sewer rats. But i have a rat and rats are quite clean. People might be afraid of them because they think they bite...But who knows.
first off, little news flash, the plague was NOT caused by rats but by fleas on rats.

i dont know why theyre so unappealing. i have 3 rats and i remember watching a show before i got them on NY city rats and how they can have a bite so strong they go right down to the bone. but then i also learned rats do not bite and if they do they were bred improperly.
i breed dumbo rats and have found them to be the best pet i have ever owned

i think its just ignorance if they aint held a rat they dont know what there missing id RATher have a rat than a hamster as rat dont bite hamsters do
Ohh, k, well thats good :)

Any small rodents that are good for allergies?

My niece really wants a hamster for her birthday but she has asthma pretty bad and my sister [her mom] is afraid that she the shavings or the pet itself may bother her asthma.

Is there any allergy friendly small rodents [other than birds, fish, or rats] that are okay for kids with asthma?

    Thanks!!!!

~~Any small rodents that are good for allergies?
I would suggest a Land Hermit Crab! They don't smell at all! But if you do get some kind of pet, i would suggest getting them from a family owned pet store..

http://www.wikihow.com/Care-for-Hermit-CrabsAny small rodents that are good for allergies?
Maybe. I have asthma and I had 2 rabbits. I used to keep them in the hallway, then the living room. I had no problems. After moving them into my room, I had horrible breathing problems. I went to the doctor and my blood oxygen level was at 84% (at 89% people are put on oxygen tanks). I couldn't put them back in the living room, so I had to give my rabbits away. A year later, I was watching my sister's pet rat and the problem came back, and the rat was only around for a few days.

If she really wants a small pet, she may be able to get one. They would have to get a dust-free bedding like CareFresh or a recycled newspaper litter, not wood shavings. I would suggest not getting an animal that requires hay like a rabbit or guinea pig. Also, don't keep the pet in her bedroom. Maybe you should find out if a friend of hers has a pet hamster and ask if you can have it come over for a week or so and see how she does.

Whta does everyone on Yahoo!Answers seem to be unaware of their rodents pregnancy until the rodent gives birth?

It just seems a little repetetive.

Every question I read about someone getting baby guinea pigs or hamster or rats always include ';I didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth!!!Lololol :)';.Whta does everyone on Yahoo!Answers seem to be unaware of their rodents pregnancy until the rodent gives birth?
    People just want to brag I think. It's a stupid excuse because almost all of them if you look at their recent questions will say ';I got a boy and girl, and i hope they have babiez ;P';

I have when people do that. They're just creating more problems for all those shelters and pet stores.

I only buy gerbils from pet stores (it's a once in a blue moon thing) if they have same sex. If they have mix sex I would never buy from them.

Everyone really needs to rethink this. Yah babie rats/mice/gerbils/hamsters are cute. But what happens to them once they get older? Most people just kill them or they become snake food.

USE YOUR MINDS PEOPLE.Whta does everyone on Yahoo!Answers seem to be unaware of their rodents pregnancy until the rodent gives birth?
It's a stupid excuse for them to use, but most will probably say they were unaware they could become pregnant so fast. But it's basically they wanted the pet so bad they didn't think to do all the research before buying it, and figured they'd learn how to take care of it as they went along. It's quite sad at how many unwanted pets there are in the world that were bred unknowingly by (and I hate to say this, but it is mostly true) ignorant owners. But also there are many pet stores with limited or no knowledge on the pets that they are supplying, and many keep the young together too long, this results in new owners buying already pregnant females. I personally do breed my rats, but always with the intention of keeping the whole litter, I've had the same bloodline for 10 years now, only bringing in outside blood from unrelated males (for obvious reasons).
Well, that is basically the reason they are writing the question. Because they didn't know and need info. If they knew, then they would have done the research.

It might be because Pet Stores might not know if the animal is pregnate and tells the buyer they aren't.
idk if you have had it a long time and it suddenly gets fat then its Pretty obvious

i had pet mice before but i only had it 3 days before it gave birth i didn't even get a chance to handle it

I have rodents in attic and crawl space but not in the house?

I don't want the bother of traps, but have 3 dogs and live in the country and dont want to poison all the other critters, does anyone know of a poison that will make to mice and or rats leave to house to die without causing secondary poisoning?

(other animals eating courpses and getting poisoned)I have rodents in attic and crawl space but not in the house?
I bought these really cool ';no see, no touch'; mouse traps at Target-they are made by D-Con. They are round--the poison is inside--you open them up (there is a little tiny entrance hole for the mouse to go in)--put a little peanut butter inside to entice them) When they go in to get the peanut butter-the thing shuts them inside where they die--You just dispose of the whole thing and you're rodent free-Your pets can't get into the poison so it's safe. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats-of course, I don't put the traps right under my pets noses cuz I know their curiousity will get the best of them--common sense-ya know--try them out and see if you like them--they come 2 in a pack for under $5.00. GOOD LUCKI have rodents in attic and crawl space but not in the house?
Get some peppermint essential oil- a few drops per cup of water in a sprayer and spray around the entrance areas. Rodents hate it!

Any poison can harm your pets if they eat it or the poisoned critters.

It's starting to get cold out, and this is the time of year were snakes will try and look for a warm place to stay. if you have any boxes sitting around on the garage floor move them (put them up high). If you have an old book case or stove or an old fridge in there, check behind to see if the snake is there. If it is hiding and you find it, get a big long stick and try your best to move it back out side. Or ask a friend or neighbor to help you.I saw a baby black snake enter my garage-Yes the garage door was up! How do I keep snakes, rodents, etc. out ?
you wont know till its eaten you.
Well some snakes will keep the rodents out for you :) . There is no reason to be afraid of snakes, as long as you research them in your area to know what ones are venomous, and which ones are not. Getting an exterminator i think is cruel, if you are really worried about it i would try and find an animal control place (where they dont kill the snkes) and try and have them find the snake for you :)

Good luck getting it out of your house! :)
There is no way just to get an exteriminator come and exterminate the house.Thats the only way to get the rodents and snakes out.If it is just a black sanke they wont hurt you they dont have fangs. But if your deathly afraid of them you need to call an exterminator.Because thats what i did.I just usually. But like i said if your deathly afraid of snakes. You need an exterminator.

Both will do but most of the rodent questions are bout hamsters and all so most of the ppl mite know more about hamsters and all so it mite be better to put it in the general pets section.
You're right! Rabbits are ';lagimorphs'; (not sure I spelled that Right, sorry!) I think you'd get the most answers in the general pets section. Hermit crabs might be good pets. Or fish. Fish would be the safest betWhat pet can I have I'm severely allergic to cats, dogs %26amp; rodents?
This may seem crazy but ill do my best to try and help. I was severelyyyyy allergic to the same things as you. What i did wasn't the smartest idea but i got a dog and after about a month i got used to him and now i can have almost any animal. HOWEVER if you are very very allergic with no chance of becoming imune, have you ever looked into hairless dogs? Maybe that would help. Other than that the only other pet's that im sure you wouldnt be allergic to is something like a turtle which can also be a fun pet. Hope this helped!
Get some allergy tests done before you get any sort of a pet. Birds do not have any ties to dust mites or mold. I have severe allergies %26amp; I have had birds since 97 with no problems. Dust mites feed off on any sort of dead skin cells, or dust which is us. Anywho, I highly suggest you get some allergy tests done before you commit to any sort of a pet.
depending on how old you are you might be able to overcome your allergic reaction...i use to be allergic to cats but where im from...people throw these animals in the streets as if there worthless so i feed them and try to get them to be adopted if they're friendly and i do it everyday at first my face would just swell up but after a month i would say everything stop and now im glad.
I don't approve of humans having pets at all, but if you must have a pet why not try a snake - obviously of a non-venomous variety? They are colorful, portable, pleasant to handle, relatively easy to feed, water, and clean, and absolutely fascinating in everything they do.
fish, reptiles(snakes, lizards etc, stick insects, giant african land snails,)

what ever pet you decide to buy do research on the care, feeding etc.
Fish, iguana, snake, turtle, spider etc.. probable not the cutest pets but unfortunately you don't have much of a choice
How does dust mites and mold rule out birds? I'm allergic to cats and dogs also, but not birds.
    you can get allergy shots
poodles are ok cause their fur is not really fur. Its hair. I thinks yorkies are covered in hair too.

How to stop cats from eating rodents?

Our cat keeps eating mice and getting worms. Had him dewormed but keeps on eating them. How to stop cats from eating rodents?
Unless you're able to contain the cat indoors, where there (hopefully) isn't any mice available to kill/eat, then you cannot expect the cat to stop doing what is a natural instinct to them. How to stop cats from eating rodents?
Keep the cat inside and away from rodents.
attach a couple of bells to his collar, make sure they are very noisy and they sound with every move the cat makes. That might help and it's a simple solution. You should also get rid of the mice, YUCK! but be careful, can't poison rats without poisoning cats, you should probably send kitty on a trip or seclude him until you get rid of all the infestation.
My husband and I's cats aren't allowed to eat mice either. Only because I don't want to wake up to little guts all over the house and the people who previously owned our home, and our neighbors use a lot of mouse poisoning and I don't want my cats getting sick. What I do to make sure they don't eat them is, first off, my cats are only indoor cats, I feed them as much as they want, they are on full feed and I keep tons of mouse traps out, the decon ones where the mouse goes in and you don't see them and its an easy mess to clean up. We haven't had a problem with mice at all and the cats wont eat them.
    Keep him inside.
It is the nature of the cat and rodent relationship. Why would you want to stop it? Is your cat fixed so he/she won't want to go outside so much? Stock up on good treats and de-wormer, and be glad you have a good cat!
It's natural for cats to do, it's what cats do to keep the ecology balanced. Keep worming them.
That's what cats do. Stock up on wormer and be thankful it's doing its job!
Well, first of all, you can't really stop a cat from eating rodents because its part of a cat's natural instinct. You can't expect a cat to stop what it was made to do. But, about eating mice, do you have a mouse problem? Are you feeding him enough? If you have a mouse problem then your cat is trying to help you, don't try to stop him. (unless you like mice)

One way though that you can try to stop your cat from eating too many rodents is to keep him inside for most of the time.

And, about the getting worms part, all cats get worms at least a few times during their lives. Just keep worming him. Getting worms is not really a purposeful thing.
kill the cat, just kidding, it's doing it's job, let it be what it is, a cat.
i dont think you can, if your worried about worms, there are tablets out there.. other wise its in your cats nature to eat mice.. good luck

Did you know that roadrunners eat rodents?

I saw one eating a mouse a couple of days ago. I thought they only ate reptiles, amphibians and insects. It was really amazing to see him gulp the little critter down.Did you know that roadrunners eat rodents?
and they are fugly tooDid you know that roadrunners eat rodents?
yes I did....a friend of mine saw a Great Blue Heron eat a whole squirrel!!! Now that is something to see!!
Yes. Roadrunners are opportunistic and will sample anything.

  • Do they let you hold rodents before you buy them at petco?

I wanna get these two male Djungarian hamsters at Petco. They look really sweet, active, and healthy, but does petco let you hold them first?Do they let you hold rodents before you buy them at petco?
Depending on the person who's serving you, you may need to ask, but you should definately hold anyone you're thinking about adopting.

When we've adopted from Petco the animal is usually placed into my hands, but when we adopted our most recent rat doe the guy working there was reluctant to put his hand into the rat enclosure so I reached in %26amp; got her. When I handed her to my SO while I filled out the paper, he casually put her on his shoulder which kinda surprised the assorted onlookers.Do they let you hold rodents before you buy them at petco?
yes, i would imagine so, because you may not know if you want them or not and you want to meet them right? so just ask who ever is in chaarge of that section in the meantime, and im sure they will bring you where you can hold them.
No they won't sorry, if its a proper pet shop they will tell you to give them a couple of days before you holding them.

Sorry if this wasn't what you wanted to hear, but proper people wont let you.

    sorry
they did for me. I was allowed to hold my little guys before I bought them. Also be carfull, rats can sometimes get a cold wile being shipped to the pet store, so see if they look healthy.
I'm sure they would if you asked. I don't see why they wouldn't. If you're under 18 though, you may have to have your parent with you. Some places just don't trust kids around the animals =/
Of course they let you hold them. You just have to ask whoever is working there.
Yes, but if you are a kid have a parent with you

If rabbits looked like other rodents would women still think theyre cute?

If rabbits had long scaly tails, short ears, were as known for disease propogation as their close cousin rattus rattus, the rat, would women still cuddle with them and think they were adorable? If rabbits looked like other rodents would women still think theyre cute?
Probably not. I used to think that rabbits and hares were in the order of rodentia too. But they have been reclassified to lagomorpha making them distant cousins (kind of like humans and dogs).

Wiki says that lagomorphs differ from rodents in that:

    * they have four incisors in the upper jaw (not two, as in the Rodentia);

    * they are almost wholly herbivorous (unlike rodents, many of which will eat both meat and vegetation;

    * the male's scrotum is in front of the penis (unlike rodents', which is behind); and

    * the penis contains no bone (baculum), unlike in rodents.

However, they resemble rodents in that their teeth grow throughout their life, thus necessitating constant chewing to keep them from growing too long.If rabbits looked like other rodents would women still think theyre cute?
    Hey!

    I'm a woman!

I like mice just as much as I like rabbits!

Rabbits aren't rodents, so they wouldn't really need to look like them at all. They are lagomorphs. You also do not cuddle a rabbit, as they are very nervous prey animals and are more likely to kick at you than allow you to hug them.

But I would still like them, I think rats are cute too. Hamsters, mice, degu, rats, all furry and adorable. I won't go out and touch a wild mouse/rat, but I'm not going to shriek and try to kill it with a broom either.
no coz women like rabbits coz of how cute nd cuddly they r not bcoz theyre called a rabbit lol

Probably not. And if pigs could fly they'd need to wear goggles and crash helmets. ;-)

Can you help me find some information on the horrors of the traps people use to catch rodents?

I'm writing a persuasive essay about using live traps instead of the kill traps and I want all the gory details.

There is a possibility that my essay will be featured in the local paper, so I'm trying to do my best to get people to start buying live-traps.

Does PETA care about all the snakes and rodents killed by tractors harvesting organic produce?

Every year, thousands of snakes and rodents are killed during the harvesting of soybeans and other ';organic'; health foods. Their blood is on the hands of those murdering vegetarians and vegans.Does PETA care about all the snakes and rodents killed by tractors harvesting organic produce?
PETA is a bullsh*t organization. They support breed bans and would rather spend money on their advertising than saving animals.Does PETA care about all the snakes and rodents killed by tractors harvesting organic produce?
i really don't know if PETA cares..i'm sure if they heard about this they would be upset..

but..upset enough to do anything? i dont know.

its kind of like..roadkill..the raccoons and skunks that walk into the highway..and are left there on the side of the road. I love animals..but it is their fault. so..there isn't much anyone can do to stop it.

if some animals get killed in agricultural fields..then i guess that's just the way it goes..if it was INTENTIONAL..then yeah..PETA would be pissed off..I don't think anyones aiming for snakes and mouses when they're harvesting soybeans.
I’m sure they “care” but they will gain far less attention focusing on that rather then holding major protests or celebrity bashing. In my opinion at least… To each his/her own I suppose.

Also, it will be very hard for them to find the time to focus on tractor killings because they will be at every Michael Vick related NFL event.

    Great question, very interesting perspective…
Probably, I mean they were mad at Obama for literally swatting a fly. Don't waste your time trying to prove them to be hypocrites, everyone knows they are. I mean they don't believe animals should be pets yet they have shelters where they do pet adoptions (they're shelters aren't even no kill) But honestly PETA probably thinks we should all handpick our homegrown food on our magical utopian farms
Justin I would suggest to you get off the computer and spend all your days as a volunteer picking corn by hand for farmers across America saving snakes and rodents every day. We Americans will be forever great full to you.
They probably don't care about the snakes and rodents they kill, although they should care about all animals. I don't care for PETA
LOL. The sacrifice of snakes and rodents for a chemical free food, void of nutrients like genetically modified foods, is worth it.
PETA will probably protest this...after they are finished euthanizing abandoned kittens they couldn't find homes for. I wonder if they are embarrassed over that hidden camera expose...
PETA, what a joke. They euthanized 95% of the animals that were in their care over the course of 2008.

They only care about getting donations so they do not have to get a real job.
And what about all of the poor, little, helpless bugs and tiny worms that are getting eaten in those organic foods?
No, they just care about a fly in the white house. ha, ha.

What materials are needed to build a wall maze for a science project for rodents?

I'd start with the foam boards used for display posters. The ones that have two sides of paper with a foam core. It is easy to cut with a utility knife and a straight-edge.

You should be able to use a hot-melt glue gun to mount the walls in place. Use pieces of wall at right angles (i.e. corners) to stiffen the maze. If the rodents want to climb over the wall, just lay a piece of plexiglas over the top. Although perhaps those should be displayed as the smartest rodents in the group.

Why are gerbils illegial to own in california but not hamsters or other rodents ?

Something about the laws in Ca that protect the other wildlife.

Because gerbils are very adaptable creatures and could find a way to survive, if the gerbil escapes it can thrive in the climate there possibly out competing several indigenous animals for resources. Arizona and Florida also tend to make owning certain animals difficult for the same reason. Why are gerbils illegial to own in california but not hamsters or other rodents ?
    they are?!

i was planning on getting one a long time ago...Why are gerbils illegial to own in california but not hamsters or other rodents ?
I don't know, The department of Fish and Game thinks they'll get out and overpopulate the state, but I don't think that would ever happen. I hate all the illegal animal laws in California, you can't have a hedgehog or ferret either!
hamsters can't move around as well as gerbils.. they are slow and can't climb, and they are not as smart.. hamsters are very domesticated.. gerbils are very capable of living on their own in the wild and fending for themselves.. as are ferrets. Rats are too, but rats aren't illegal, maybe just in some cities.

    it really sucks too.. my BF has always wanted a ferret.. and i really wanted a gerbil.. i didn't know gerbils were illegal.. was wondering why i couldn't find any in pet stores -_-;
i believe it is because the gerbils carry a diesese where the hamster does not
I think the only reason a considerably domestic animal is illegal in one area is to prevent possible ecological interference.

It has happened plenty of times in history. An alien animal arrives in one area, gets out, and sort of ';takes over'; the competing wildlife for the habitatss and food. This causes the native animals to die out, and the new animal to thrive. I don't know the technical reason, but basically the ecosystem gets messed up, and animals start migrating or just dying out.

Not only gerbils, but ferrets hedgehogs and rats, too, are illegal in California. They fall under the category of ';wild'; animals, and need a license for the keeping of wild animals. To get the license, you need a purpose like education, it unfortunately isn't open to pet owners.

I think hamsters remain legal, because for some reason, scientists do not see them as a threat. I personally do not get it. It seems like they just threw around some banning laws without considering whether that is totally necessary.
As others mentioned, it's due to gerbils' adaptiveness and the damage to the ecosystem if they were be released and become wild.

Though honestly, I think it's a little ridiculous. They don't populate THAT fast, and there are several resources to go around. The one real negative thing may be an increase in the population of ';predators';.

Also, to Eraser Eraser... rats aren't illegal or in any way restricted in California. They're sold at every pet store, and no special license is needed.
I knew about Ferrets........but Gerbils too? Odd.

Here's what I found, exploring the search engines:

    ';Gerbils are very adaptive animals and their has to be a concern of what would happen if animals released, on purpose or by accident, where to establish themselves in the wild. Areas which offer a suitable environment and climate would be foolish not to consider such issues. ';

    ';In some countries introduced species have wiped out other species native to that area. The law is in place to protect animals.';
Wow, you can't own ferrets or gerbils? What happened to ';freedom';?

  • What rodents can be kept in male pairs?

I know that the two males would have to be from the same litter, but I've been getting mixed answers about details; which kinds of rodents can be kept in pairs (males)? What rodents can be kept in male pairs?
umm let me think, roborovski hamsters, rats, dwarf hamsters (sometimes), and regular hamsters (only if raised together or placed in same cage at petstore, must buy both at same time)What rodents can be kept in male pairs?
All male rodents should be able to be kept together with the exception of strictly solitary rodents like Syrian hamsters. The only way they can be kept together, though is if they are met when very young (same litter, as you said). Males, despite being in the same litter, may still fight. Usually it's just a little argument, but sometimes (like with mice) it could turn deadly. The best thing to do is to get females from the same litter. I prefer female rodents, anyways. They always smell better and don't have 'big butts' as I've said since I was little.
Two males don't necessarily have to be from the same litter. At least, not with rats. It's definitely easier if they are, because they already know each other, but many rats can be introduced later in life and get along fine, as long as you're careful.

Rats are a great pet, and the only rodent I know anything about. :) All rats need to be kept in groups of at least two, but the more the merrier.
Male rats can be kept together, and don't have to be from the same litter. Even male rats that have never met before will usually get along fine. It's a common misconception that all male rodents fight; most will get along just fine as long as they don't have a female to fight over.
I am pretty sure any rodents can be kept in male pairs. They don't have to be from the same litter, but you might need to ease into the introduction process. You should check the websites I list, they are specifically for rats (which I have and LOVE, they are great pets) but I am pretty sure the tips they have are good ideas for any rodents.

(If you get two rodents at the same time where they have been kept in the same cage at a pet store or whatever, they will probably be fine from the start.)
    Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Rats, mice.

    NOT: HAMSTERS!

    I prefer gerbils, they are small, fun to watch, super friendly. They are the least smelly of all rodents. The live long lives for being a pocket pet. They are low maintenance and don't have any special dietary needs. They don't take up a lot of space. They sleep at night, and they hardly ever bite. If you get them from a breeder, they are already ';jump in your hand friendly.';

    http://www.agsgerbils.org/Find
my male rats get along together splendidly. from experience, i'd say do NOT put together male hamsters or mice. i've had plenty of problems with them fighting which ended up in vet visits and have to figure out multiple living situations.
All rodents can be kept in male pairs, they wont fight unless there is a female around.
I know guinea pigs can.... other then that, my knowledge ends. Sorry.

Edit:: I'm so stupid, I forgot about rats! Rats and guinea pigs are similar in the sense that they need companions.
guinea pigs, But and it doesn't have to be from the same litter they could have like grown up together in the same cage.. or known each other for like long time..
just about all male pair rodents will fight, but personaly i would say get a pair of rats, well as long as they have been together when you buy them it should be fine, but they might fight some time!!

What type of charge should I expect for pest control (insects and rodents)?

Different prices for different parts of the country. Get two or three free estimates. They need to come back in a few weeks to take care of the hatched insects and any new born mice that show up.What type of charge should I expect for pest control (insects and rodents)?
I just paid $130 for the yard and inside of my 7 room rent house for fleas and cockroaches. And he's going to have to come back. Worst infestation he'd ever seen, and he's a pro.

Waht are your favorite kind of rodents?

I like Gerbils because they are so curious and like to burrow. What is your favorite kind and why?Waht are your favorite kind of rodents?
I'm slightly obsessed with Capybara- partly because they are just ridiculously huge, but partly because of a story I heard.

Apparently, when Catholic missionaries were first getting set up in South America, they were having trouble catching enough fish during lent, so they asked the pope to declare the capybara a fish (since it lives in the water and is much easier to catch). I don't know if that's true or not, but it makes me smile whenever I think about it.Waht are your favorite kind of rodents?
I like bunnies because they are just so fun to watch not to mention they love to cuddle
Rats (domesticated) because they love people so much and are extremely forgiving and sweet %26lt;3.
If I was forced to own a rodent (I wouldn't have one unless I was forced) it would have to be a hamster. At least they are cure and cuddly.
I think chipmunks are really cute...
    hamster, coz its cute
    the ones in a cage
Guinea pigs are adorable. They are a mix between a hamster and bunny. More active than a rabbit, and more docile than a hamster... thus, there's the mouse like cuteness of the hamster, and the calmness while being held of a rabbit.... Not to mention their adorable little sounds. So cute....

Dwarf hamsters are also adorable too. I own 6 little guys and all are friendly, never biting and happy jumping into my hands when offered.
I have had mice, dormice, hamsters (4 species), guinea pigs, rabbits, hedgehogs, gerbils, dugues, and chinchillas.

I would have to say my favorite is the chinchillas, but then, they are not for everyone.

As for the best of the smaller, shorter lived rodents, I will go with gerbils. They are really the best in their class, once they are tamed and bonded to you. I had a little female (Peanut), who was raising a litter while I was gone out of town for an extended period. After 6 weeks, I came home, spoke her name as I opened her cage, with her and the babies inside, and she jumped into my hand! She was a really sweet animal.
I just love rats, because they are so pretty and cute and also extremely clever. I love their graceful shape and trembly little whiskers.

My tulips are being eaten by rodents as they start to bloom. Are there any proven methods to stop this?

As the tulips and crocuses poke their heads out of the ground, the rodents are eating them. Not sure if it's squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks or whatever. Please Help!!!!!!My tulips are being eaten by rodents as they start to bloom. Are there any proven methods to stop this?
Try planting daffodils, autumn crocuses, or snowdrops instead. To stop them from eating your existing plants try chicken wire, traps, and in the case of moles try some stakes that use sound. My tulips are being eaten by rodents as they start to bloom. Are there any proven methods to stop this?
Place lightweight screening over your bulbs till they start apprearing and then remove the screen.
    Grow roses instead.
One downside of black pepper and urine is that you have to reapply after a rain, and if it rained overnight, the little critters are off in the morning with your hard work for breakfast.

I have seen mothballs suggested, but I have never tried it.

Chicken wire is probably one of the most effective long term remedies. Use large metal staples used for fencing to secure the chicken wire, then cover with mulch.
I actually used this in a dog answer a few minutes ago, but it works much better here.

We had problems with squirrels in the tulip beds. I mixed a lot of black pepper in with the top soil. After a few big sneezes, the they went somewhere else!
Try putting coyote urine around them. The little critters, will stay away, if they think that there is a coyote around.

PETA members/supporters: Is it okay to kill pests like bugs and rodents?

Insects and rodents are living things too. Is it okay to kill them? I'm not talking about randomly killing a bug that is outside minding its own business. I'm talking cockroach, termites, rat infestations and other things of that nature. Unlike flies and mosquitoes, these pests are intensely invasive and live in the walls and floors. And if we're not allowed to kill them how do we get rid of them?

Thank you in advance.PETA members/supporters: Is it okay to kill pests like bugs and rodents?
I'm not really a PETA supporter, but I'm vegan and think about this sort of thing.

I try to avoid killing bugs and insects that find their way into the apartment. I usually end up scooping them up with a piece of paper and carrying them outside, usually muttering ';I hate you. Don't you dare crawl up on me... (I'm not a big fan). I feel that when there is a bug in the house that is not hurting anything, it is hypocritical of me to smoosh it when I have a small garden outside I can put them in.

However, these creepy crawlies are usually things like spiders, which are actually very helpful and beneficial. I think there is an additional element that comes into play when you are looking at pests.

Household pests often come with a risk of disease. The risk to humans and the pets that live with them is what would possibly make it okay to kill them. In the first example, the insect was a singular, not a mass, problem. It was also not a known carrier of disease or poisonous. In the current example, there are a mass of disease carrying animals. If there is not acceptable alternative method (see below), then killing the animals that, by invading your home, have created a serious health risk, could be justified.

There are humane traps for rodents. These are the preferred alternative. However, if you live in a densely populated area, the mice that come into your house are not field mice that you can release into a field nearby to roam free. They are mice adapted to urban living that will return to your housing complex once released and continue to breed, thereby worsening the potential health problem. In this case humane traps are not always an effective solution, nor are they really humane because they allow more pests to breed that will eventually have to be destroyed.

In sum, I believe that veganism, some strains of animal rights, and animal welfare positions would advocate a definition of cruelty free living that includes an accounting of health risks to humans an their animal companions.PETA members/supporters: Is it okay to kill pests like bugs and rodents?
If the bug could kill you, it wouldn't think twice, would it?

no it is not okay to kill rodents they are animals. bugs well i kill spiders cause i have a phobia of them and i feel bad afterwards =/
    NO! its horrible

bugs, they ar living, but killing them is a quik pain

    but RODENTS!?!?!? thats another story..........
No, you should never purposely killing them in my opinion.

You can get humane rodent traps were the rat/mouse goes in to get a piece of food and the door shuts nice and safely. For insects i'm not really sure.
WHY would it make any difference in which the rodent or bug was killed?

they ar both still living, and are both still equal.

    are they not?
Hmmm. So Rodents are animals and not okay to kill but okay to kill bugs because they are not animals. Hate to tell y'all this but insects are animals just like rats, cows, dogs and parrots.
Peta screams a lot of words but show me one member that is willing to live with a rats or cockroachs in their homes. They spread Filth, disease and infest an area with hundreds and some times thousands if not taken care of right away. This is why we have o.c.e.a and the dpt of heath to monitor resturants and food markets to make sure these pests do not over run the food and products we eat on a daily basis.
well, im kind of on the wall with that one.

i mean, yeshhh they're very annoying, but the whole thing about peta is animal rights and stuff, so i dont know. i guess you could decide if the infestation is worth the slaughter of these otherwise innocent creatures??

i mean, bugs i really dont have a problem with killing, but like rat/mouse infestations, thats kind of mean...

    *just my opinion, btw.!!*
Keep this in mind: Vegan does not = Buddhist monk. When it comes to vermin, insects, parasites and such then people have to protect themselves and their homes. I don't kill spiders, but I will kill cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes, termites etc...

I have had cats so long that I haven't had to worry about mice, I don't have any cats now and I haven't seen any mice yet so I am not sure how I will deal with that, but I'll go with one of the humane options that the other people mentioned.

Side note: My brother used to have a cat that caught mice and brought them into the house, alive. She wouldn't kill them. lol
If it must be done, then do it with a sad face and sorrow. Talk to God about how they harm your health.
You can trap rodents without hurting them and let them go out in the woods somewhere. It works - we got rid of a pesky groundhog and a couple mice that way.

As to bugs, well, yeah, whether it's right or not, I poison them. They freak me out, especially roaches. Something about the way they move gives me a systemic case of the willies.
You can buy rodent traps or even make the ones which dont harm them. Then you can release them in a nice spot with trees and stuff. Worked for us. But I think its okay to kill bugs.
