What is the best and easiest way to get rid of mice/rodents from dwelling in the house?

I don't want to use the mice poison because they stink up the place if I can't see thier bodies after awhile. I tried using sticky fly paper too. I can't get an exterminator because they're expensive. What is the best and easiest way to get rid of mice/rodents from dwelling in the house?
I found that glue traps worked well for us recently. We set them right out where the ';evidence'; was, and baited them with cereal, bread crumbs, peanut butter, nuts, etc. Once in the trap, the mouse can't move--so you can dispose of the whole thing.

Then, you need to prevent them from getting in--use steel wool in any openings they could be using to get in. Mice won't chew through steel wool.

Additionally--on cats. In order for cats to be effective hunters, they need to be hungry. Otherwise, they will just play with them. ';Barn'; cats shouldn't be fed as much as a house pet. This will force them to hunt. What is the best and easiest way to get rid of mice/rodents from dwelling in the house?
Visit a local farmer and pick up a barn kitty. No more mice, bugs, snakes, birds, squirrels. Anything that moves is cat food.
cats.
Why is it that you asked for the best and easiest way...the professional exterminator...and then say that isn't really what you want? What you really want is cheap and, I suppose, effective. That rules out cats. Cats aren't really effective since they play with the mice as often as they will kill them. If the rodent population is to high, the cat will eventually just ignore them. The cat becomes a liability that you have to feed and care for. Way to much cost and poor return on your investment potential.

I still like the old style Victor traps. The occasional snap back while setting reminds me that the struggle of man against nature isnt always easy. But those dang things work like a son-of-a-gun and there's nothing more satisfying than sitting watching my TV with an ice cold beer in my hand and hearing that tell-tale ';snap'; as another critter bites the dust. 'Course these traps can be a real bother if you have kids or you got that damn cat anyway or you like to walk barefoot around the house.

You could try shooting them. A good .22 rifle and some ammo is probably more expensive than the traps but, hey, you got something to play with after the mice are all dead. That's providing you have any time left after you get out of jail and the holes are patched.

If youve read this far then I suppose youve gotten the drift. If you have a serious problem, hire a pro. Mice, their droppings and their fleas can be a serious health problem. Think of the kids! It is costly but its done right and the problem goes away. The traps are probably next best and there are several types to choose from. Above all, be clean, destroy nesting potential outside, seal where the little critters are getting in (do some detective work around the outside of your place) and get food sources locked up tight.
