I'd like to make a compost pile in my yard, but I don't want it to attract snakes and rodents.
How do I prevent this from happening? How do I keep snakes and rodents out of a compost pile?
I have a compost pile in my yard, and have yet to find a snake or mouse in or around it. If you are really worried though, you can go buy a trash can just for organic waste. It works even better then just throwing the scraps in a pile b/c when you put the lid on, it traps the heat in and helps the decomp. of the scraps. How do I keep snakes and rodents out of a compost pile?
Food. Food attracts the rodents, and rodents attract the snakes. You knew this before you asked the question, so the real question is ';If I continue to put food in my compost pile, how can I keep rodents out of it, therefore keeping the snakes from even wanting to get in?';. The answer is just as simple though. Enclose the entire pile (top,bottom%26amp;sides) into a very tight box with holes big enough to allow bugs and worms access in and out as well as air to aid in the decomposition process but small enough to keep even the smallest mouse out. Good luck
I've never heard of compost piles attracting snakes. Rodents aren't generally attracted either, unless you're adding pasta or grains to your compost pile - items you're advised not to add. Everything on earth that was once alive composts eventually, so your compost pile will be no more likely to attract snakes and rodents than the world at large. I wouldn't be worried.
Always cover your green materials with a layer of dry, brown materials. This will eliminate any odors that could attract rodents or other hungry animals. Do not compost meat or dairy products and your compost heap should be fine.
this should not be a problem at all. go ahead and make your pile. i have had one for 30 years and never had either of these problems.
