Can rats have treats made for other rodents?

I've looked at PetsMart for rat treats and most say for hamsters, mice or gerbils. There are very few that are for rats exclusively and my two boys seem to be bored with them. Are the treats for hamsters, gerbils, or mice okay for them? Can rats have treats made for other rodents?
Absolutely not. Rats cannot ';eat anything,'; and many many things are toxic to them: like uncooked tuberous roots and citrus fruit for males. The person that pointed out that wild rats ';eat out of the garbage'; is correct. But those rats only need to live a few months (long enough to procreate).

The reason that ';treats'; made for other rodents can be dangerous for rats is that a) many contain alfalfa or dried corn, b) many are not nutritionally balanced, and c) they may contain toxic elements.

For your general knowledge, rats cannot digest alfalfa. Dried corn may contain fungal contaminates that can damage rats' livers. (There is actually a big problem where I live with people feeding squirrel's dried corn as a treat... dried corn leads to liver damage and malnutrition in them.) Also, many of the rodent ';treats'; that pet stores sell will be too high in their protein content (too many seeds).

Your rats should be eating a high quality rat block supplemented with fresh vegetables (broccoli is ideal) daily, fruit a couple times a week (as a treat), a protein like a nut or animal meat a couple times a week, and grains like dried whole wheat pasta. These things count as ';treats.'; They should not be eating processed, fatty or sugary foods period. Can rats have treats made for other rodents?
Rats can eat pretty much anything.. I mean, not poison, but no foods is toxic to a rat. NONE. Seriously, but they wont eat something that make them feel sick twice. [Gave my rats a taste of spicy chips so they wouldn't maul me for them, and they never tried them again. XD]

But healthy snacks you'd eat yourself are good. Make some popcorn [without butter] and that'll do them just fine! Or just scraps from a healthy dinner.

Watch out for gassy foods, as rats can't burp, and it'd hurt their bellies a lot of be bloated up.
i think so.... hey, if they can eat out of the garbage, then i'm sure it won't do any harm... just watch out if he starts behaving differently... he might not feel too good if he eats a lot. also, i have owned a rat for a number of years, and i've fed him other treats, nothing made him sick
Rats won't eat alfalfa which is many of the ';other'; pet foods. Try a blend of bird sunflower seeds and dry dog and or cat kibble. make sure to supplement with fresh vegetables and fruit. never leave moist foods in the cage remove when rat is done eating.)
Yep they're fine, you should also try locally owned shops for unique treats and also try petco as well.
