How can I keep rodents out of my patio garden?

I live on the third floor of an apartment building and something keeps eating my pumpkin plants. I have tried spraying the plants with pepper, but they just dig up the plants and eat the roots. I tried fencing the planters with plastic garden wire, but they chewed through and at the plants. The planters are too big to bring in the house every night; any suggestions? How can I keep rodents out of my patio garden?
Try Ammonia, mix it with water in squirt bottle, give it like 2-4 squirts around each pot, I live in the country and have cats come to my house to visit. It keeps them away till it rains. I know mice don't like peppermint oil or red pepper seeds. you know, the red pepper we shake on our pizza. So maybe u mite shake some of that onto your soil of your plants. won't hurt to try. Then of of course there is always grandma's ole way's. and dude don't laugh, cause they always worked. Human hair clippings around the plants to keep critters away,or moth balls. Lay a couple around the foot of each plant half buried in the soil maybe more depends on size of your pot. Up to U. I like hair around my flowers so rabbits won't eat em all- and moth ball do the trick ,red pep seeds to-- honestly it all works,, try it---( U can always get yourself a slingshot, a 24 pack stay up and have a good ole time. Try putting moth balls around the plants.
Mouse traps would seem to be a good solution.
Sunbeam Aluminum Ground Rodent Repeller
You can clean your patio with bleach, but of course this is time consuming and may discolor your patio. So another choose is going to the store, and asking for the best kind of bug repellent. Once you get the repellent spray down the patio with the repellent. Note: you may have to do this more than once, but soon the bugs will stop showing up. Also note that the bugs may be attracted to your environment.
